Before accepting the offer to be on the cover of Forbes, I was told that a lot of women have previously shied away from doing it. I wondered if it was because they thought, socially, it would look like they were flaunting or bragging, or it wasn’t a humble decision.
Ladies, there is a difference between being humble and working hard to see the fruits of your labor blossom, and your dreams realized. Hopefully this cover can be an inspiration to women out there that it’s okay to be proud of hard earned success and that there is no shame in being a boss.
It takes courage to be the author of your life. When you are struggling through one of the difficult parts of turning your dreams into reality, you may wonder why you always get stuck with having to put up with so much fear and uncertainty. Why, you wonder, couldn’t I feel more courageous, like those other people do.
You don’t feel courageous because courage is not an emotion. There is no such thing as feeling “courageous;” It is an imaginary emotion. Courage consists of doing what you said you would do even when you don’t want to. In the face of danger you have a choice to be the delegate of either your commitments or your feelings. It’s as simple and as difficult as that.
Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation.
In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity – it is the power that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared.
I have been bent and broken, but – I hope – into a better shape.
I keep meeting women who I’ve heard all my life are bitchy and pushy and so on and so forth — I meet them and they’re nice, compassionate people. If you don’t play your role, if you dare to aspire to something – then you get it automatically, but it’s hard for me to remember that.
